Default lymph node in front of ear?

Well, my husband scared me last night when he said he had called and made himself an appt with his onc for Monday(not due for a checkup until May). Apparently he felt a new lump above his jawbone, in front of his ear.

He's also battling a sinus infection, so I'm hoping it's related to that. Of course, with all of the sinus infections he's had over the years, he's never noticed a lump there before. I haven't felt it myself, but Brian says it's nearly the size of a nickel. His cancerous nodes are in his neck and under his collar bone.

So, does anyone know if you have a lymph node on your face in front of your ear?

Thanks,
Amanda

You do. I can feel mine in front of my right ear all the time. It feels like a little bb.

Heather gave the name for it once.

Hoping it's just reacting to the infection or something.

Amanda,

Yes, there are lymph nodes in that area. Here is a site that shows where the lymph nodes are. I truly hope the sinus infection is the cause of the enlarged node.

Amanda I am sorry about these worries for you and your husband. Hopefully it is just due to the flu. It is wise to have checked out regardless. Best wishes

I hope it is just a sinus thing. Try not to let him worry too much about it until he sees the doc. I know, easier said then done right.

Hoping it turns out to be a virus of some sort with quick resolution.

(It's the preauricular! You may wonder why I know that...the lymph system was the one I got stuck with during our physical assessment class. The irony.)

I had a diseased lymph node in my parotid gland which was about 1 finger-width in front of my right ear. Hence, my dx of DLBCL. It started out being small & grew to a large walnut size at the time it was remvoed. Hope his is nothing more than an infection.

Well, the onc felt that the node was cancer-related and not due to the infection. I guess nodes that are infection-related tend to be more tender and Brian's is not. He also has significant growth in several other nodes in his neck since his last scan. So, it's growing pretty fast for a slow-growing cancer.

We had been debating starting treatment when Brian is out of school this summer, so this decided for us. Brian wants to do the rituxan maintenance trial. So, not great news, but nothing like hearing the word "cancer" for the first time.

Thanks for the well wishes. Cross your fingers rituxin is the magic IV. I'm not sure what we'll do if it doesn't work. I know we'll head back to IU to get their opinion when the time comes.

Amanda,

I'm sorry Brian's watch and wait time is ending. I hope Rituxan works well for him. The infusions were very easy for me with really no side effects. I felt achy and fevered for a few hours after the first infusion, but no side effects at all after the other three. I was able to go on with life as usual without even feeling tired the next day. The day of treatment I always felt a little "out there" from the Benadryl, but unlike most, it didn't put me to sleep. I wish you both well in your decision making.

Heidi

Sorry about the nodes. Rituxan is a great drug, very effective and very well tolerated. I had virtually no side effects, just a long, boring day of infusion, and grogginess from the benadryl.

Best wishes
