Default LLS \'First Connect\' and Co-Pay assistance programs

Dear friends,

I am happy to share some good news: Leukemia and Lymphoma Society offers free support 'First Connection' program for newly diagnosed patients. I just completed the training and am happy to report that there are multiple resources available including calls and financial help. The latest and greatest is the co-pay assistance program which covers Hodgkins and Non-Hodgkins co-pays up to $2,500!!! (this is in addition to the $500 for travel, parking program). So I am looking forward to volunteering and being the first connect ambassador

Natalia,

Thank you. It is so nice of you to share your experience with those who are newly diagnosed. I think that is the hardest time when most of us felt all alone.

Heidi

I do have a question regarding the travel assistance. We did a lot of traveling, but I know my husband didn't keep gas receipts. Does that rule out our chance to get the assistance?

Heather I may be mistaken but I think Natalia is referring to the $500 you can get for misc uncovered expenses. This includes parking and travel. If you don't have records of that though you can get it for lots of things. Uncovered prescription costs is what I used it for. You do need proof but there are lots of ways to use it.

Thanks, I can check to see if I've spent enough in prescriptions, but my insurance actually was pretty good about that.

I think you can also use copays, deductibles, etc etc. Any expenses that are related to your illness. Insurance premiums? And I didn't have to actually send in receipts. I got a statement that the pharmacy can print out for you. It says how much you paid and how much insurance paid. You can get that at any pharmacy and LLS accepts that as proof of payment. LLS's financial year goes from June or July of one year to the next so any expenses from last July through today would qualify for this years assistance. Hope that helps.

Perhaps, I should clarify the 2 programs.
the $500 per year is for travel and parking.
the co-pay is strictly for co-pays and meds.

Both have application ($500 comes as a check to you from a local LLS chapter and the $2500 usually is paid directly to provider/pharmacy and comes from national fund).

As for gas -- you don't need to have the gas receipts to be reimbursed ... if you have a social worker within your hospital she just needs to authorize/sign your reimbursement request where you list a log with your dates of visits, miles driven and any parking fees encountered (I was advised to save the parking receipts). Last year we had to shell out about $1,000 for parking and gas - crazy, huh?! So you can be alove but broke - thus every bit helps! If you have further questions don't hesitate to contact your local chapter - they are pretty helpful!
