Default Co-pay Assistance Program

I just received this info and thought I'd pass it on:

Co-Pay Assistance Program Eases Treatment Costs for Qualified Patients

After dealing with the shock of his leukemia diagnosis, James Buehler, 76, and his wife, Josephine, 74, were overwhelmed by the second shock wave – the spiraling costs of paying for the drugs.

“One of the medicines had an outrageous cost,” says Josephine. “More than $1,200 for 24 pills!”

Even with Medicare coverage, the Endicott, MD couple wonder how they will pay the bills for the treatments. The Buehlers, like many cancer patients who do have medical insurance, can still find it terribly hard to pay for the remaining charges.

The Buehlers turned to the Society for help. The recently launched Co-Pay Assistance Program helps patients and their families who have difficulty coping with the costs of cancer treatment. The program provides support for prescription drug co-pays and health insurance premiums for patients who meet certain income requirements.

The new program is available only to patients with myeloma, lymphoma or acute myelogenous leukemia. Patients with private insurance, Medicare beneficiaries under Medicare part B and/or Medicare Part D, Medicare Supplementary Health Insurance or Medicare Advantage are eligible if they meet the income requirements.

“Receiving a diagnosis of a blood cancer is overwhelming, and that devastating news can be compounded by an inability to afford the treatments,” says Dwayne Howell, the Society’s president and CEO. “The Society is trying to do what it can to help alleviate this burden for the patients it serves.”

Information on the program is available at www.lls.org/copay or by calling (877) LLS-COPAY.
